Summary
The French were one of the first immigrant groups to come to Canada. They became interested in North America because of the fur trade. In 1604, two ships set sail from France to Canada with the aim of establishing the colony of New France. They also hoped to develop a monopoly over the fur trade. The group of 79 colonists spent a difficult winter on St. Croix Island, at the mouth of the St. Croix River. At least 35 of the men died of hunger or scurvy. Their next settlement was Port-Royal, in present-day Nova Scotia. Port-Royal was to become the capital of L'Acadie, or Acadia
